About the role

We are The People's Bathhouse. Our mission is to make sauna and cold plunge accessible to as many people as possible.

This is where that mission becomes a real person's afternoon. The systems handle what's predictable. You handle what's human: the greeting, the read of the room, the small thing nobody asked for.

Even part time, you're not just covering a shift. For the hours you're on, the experience of everyone in the building is yours.

How we work

We don't run on meetings, paperwork or managers standing over shoulders. Most shifts, you are the only person in the building.

That is by design. We build systems so no one has to chase tasks, then we trust the person on shift to run them.

If waiting to be told what to do feels safer than deciding, this isn't the right fit, and that's fine.

What you own

Your shift: the front desk, the floor, the cleanliness of the space, and the experience of every member who comes through.

The short version: if you see it, you own it. Ask when you don't know or when it's above your call.

  • Run it. Reliably, to standard, without supervision.
  • Improve it. Leave it better than you found it. That is Kaizen, which means continuous improvement.
  • Own it. When something fails on your watch, you fix it and make sure it doesn't fail the same way twice.

Your time

  • At least 2 shifts a month.
  • Available for a mix of shifts, including mornings, evenings and weekends.
  • At least 1 staff gathering a quarter.
  • Answer messages in Slack within 24 hours.

Taking care of members

  • Greet and check in every member with warmth, the nervous first timer most of all.
  • Notice what a member needs before they ask. That's Omotenashi, which means wholehearted hospitality.
  • Teach members to use the sauna and cold plunge safely.
  • Build real relationships with the community.
  • Handle whatever the shift brings with patience and problem solving.
  • Use our systems for check ins and accounts.
  • Pass member feedback along so we can act on it.

Taking care of the space

  • Keep the space clean and organized on your shift.
  • Follow our cleaning and sanitation procedures, and treat them as the minimum.
  • Follow all health, safety and sanitation rules.
  • Watch for safety issues and report them right away.
  • Pass along ideas to improve cleanliness and the member experience, and submit Kaizen ideas when you see a way to make a shift better.

What meeting the standard looks like

  • Every first timer leaves knowing what to do and feeling like this place is for them.
  • The space stays clean, stocked and reset for your whole shift.
  • Check ins, waivers and member guidance are accurate every time.
  • Shift tasks and your shift review are done on time and in full.
  • You flag issues and safety concerns the moment you spot them.
  • The next person walks into a clean handoff.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Able to work early mornings, evenings and weekends.
  • Knowledge of cleaning, sanitation and staying organized.
  • Open minded, and able to give and take honest feedback.
  • A passion for wellness and a real belief in Embrace North's mission.
  • Preferred: customer service experience.
  • Preferred: experience in facility maintenance or hospitality.
  • Preferred: an understanding of water chemistry and pool or spa operations.

Pay and benefits

  • Starting pay is $17.00 an hour in Minneapolis.
  • Opportunity for an increase after the first 3 months.
  • Unlimited access to the sauna and cold plunge.

More about working here

What we hire for

High agency is the belief that you can make things better, and the habit of doing it. The tasks can be taught. How you move when something's off can't.

We score these 9 traits in your interview and in every quarterly evaluation.

  • Bias for action. You handle the reversible stuff and ask on the expensive or unsafe stuff.
  • Creative persistence. When the first answer is no, that is the start of the problem, not the end.
  • Radical responsibility. You own your misses cleanly, with no blaming the schedule or the last person on shift.
  • Self efficacy. You learn the systems instead of waiting to be trained into them.
  • Self updating. You've changed your mind about something and can say why.
  • Rational optimism. You stay critical without being bitter, and you skip the gossip.
  • Low defensiveness. You take direct feedback and change the next thing you do.
  • Assertive communication. You tell us when something is wrong before it gets expensive.
  • Values clarity. You live Kaizen, Wabi Sabi and Omotenashi in how you run your shift.

The enemy is complacency

The threat to this place was never a disaster. It's the shrug: the greeting that's warm enough, the bench that's wiped well enough.

The person we want sees what could be better and fixes it before anyone asks. Even at 2 shifts a month, that is what we look for.

What accessible means

  • Affordable. A regular person can afford unlimited monthly access.
  • Approachable. A nervous first timer feels welcome and knows what to do by the end of the first visit.
  • Available. Easy to join, easy to book, and open at hours real people can come.
  • For everybody. Every body, every background and every comfort level.

Who decides what

You run daily operations within our procedures, without anyone checking over your shoulder. Anything outside those procedures goes to your lead.

If you're unsure who owns something, ask before it becomes a problem.

  • Equipment, facility and safety issues go to the Space Lead.
  • Member and experience issues go to the Community Lead.

How you are reviewed

Your quarterly evaluation scores your skills, our values and your agency. You get direct feedback in the moment, positive and corrective.

You show the behavior first, and the compensation follows.

  • Omotenashi: a warm, consistent welcome on every shift.
  • Space stewardship: cleanliness, restocking and floor presence.
  • Member knowledge: accurate check ins, waivers and guidance.
  • Shift execution: tasks and reviews done on time and in full.
  • Team and communication: clean handoffs, quick replies and openness to feedback.
