About the role

We are The People's Bathhouse. Our mission is to make sauna and cold plunge accessible to as many people as possible.

The Space Lead makes sure that mission has a building worth walking into. You hold a high standard and solve problems creatively when things wear out or break.

We live by Kaizen, which is continuous improvement, and Wabi Sabi, which is finding beauty in imperfection.

How we work

We don't run on meetings, boardrooms or layers of paperwork. We trust people who take charge.

This is the most independent role in the building. Most of the time you make the call yourself, without checking first.

Say a part is 4 weeks out, or the chiller starts making a noise on a Friday afternoon. You decide what happens next.

What you own

The physical space: equipment, cleaning protocols, inventory, temperatures, pool chemistry, maintenance, logistics and setup.

  • Run it. Reliably, to standard, without supervision.
  • Improve it. Leave it better than you found it. When you can stop a problem from coming back, build that in.
  • Own it. When it fails, you fix it and make sure it doesn't fail the same way twice.

Your week

The front desk is the majority of your hours. It's a real part of the job, and it needs to be something you want.

  • 40 hours a week.
  • 25 to 30 hours at the front desk with members.
  • 10 or more hours on facilities, maintenance and improving our systems.

Facilities and equipment

  • Maintain and monitor the saunas: temperature, cleanliness and structure.
  • Run the cold plunge: water chemistry, filtration, temperature and sanitation.
  • Inspect the facility daily and keep detailed logs.
  • Work with vendors on repairs, service and upgrades.
  • Manage maintenance supplies, cleaning products and operating materials.
  • Build and follow preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and make timely repairs.
  • Keep us in line with health, safety and building codes.

Taking care of the space

  • Keep every member space looking good and working well.
  • Catch wear and tear early and deal with it.
  • Set up systems that keep improving the facility.
  • Oversee cleanliness standards and deep cleaning.
  • Manage locker room supplies and amenities.
  • Have the space set up and ready before opening.

At the front desk

  • Greet members with Omotenashi, which means wholehearted hospitality.
  • Check people in and answer their questions.
  • Hold facility standards during your shift.
  • Handle facility concerns as they come up.
  • Set the example for member service.

What meeting the standard looks like

  • You walk the facility on every working day.
  • Temperatures, pool chemistry and cleanliness are in compliance every shift.
  • We never fully run out of a core supply, and inventory stays current.
  • Maintenance requests are logged the same day they're spotted.
  • The space is ready before opening, with no scrambling.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in facilities management, maintenance or a related field.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands on problem solving.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry, HVAC or similar systems, or a real willingness to learn. We provide Public Pool Operator certification training.
  • Highly organized, with close attention to detail.
  • Self directed. You find and fix problems instead of reporting them upward.
  • Clear communication with vendors and members.
  • Real enthusiasm for front desk work and member service, not only the technical side.
  • Physical ability to do maintenance work, including lifting and climbing.
  • Commitment to cleanliness and to keeping the space great.

Pay and benefits

  • Pay starts at $25.00 an hour, with a raise after you complete the 3 month probationary period.
  • Full healthcare benefits start after you complete the 3 month probationary period.
  • Unlimited access to the sauna and cold plunge.
  • A growing company with plans to keep expanding.

More about working here

What we hire for

We hire for high agency above tenure and credentials. We'll train you on our systems and put you through Public Pool Operator certification.

What we can't teach is how you move when something goes wrong. We score these 9 traits in your interview and in every quarterly evaluation.

  • Bias for action. You handle the reversible stuff and ask on the expensive or unsafe stuff.
  • Creative persistence. A discontinued part or a booked up vendor is a starting point, not an answer.
  • Radical responsibility. You own mistakes cleanly and know your limits. Calling an electrician when you should is good judgment.
  • Self efficacy. You build your own skills and have a method for learning new equipment.
  • Self updating. You stay curious, and you've changed your mind about how something should be done.
  • Rational optimism. You stay critical without being bitter. You describe a hard vendor by their behavior, not their character.
  • Low defensiveness. You take direct feedback and change the next thing you do.
  • Assertive communication. You tell us a chiller is failing before it fails.
  • Values clarity. You live Kaizen, Wabi Sabi and Omotenashi in how you run the building.

What accessible means

Affordable for a regular person, approachable for a nervous first timer, available at hours real people can come, and for every body and background.

A building that's clean, working and safe is most of what makes that true. When the plunge is down, we've made this less accessible.

Who decides what

Act on reversible decisions within your lane. Check first on anything expensive, unsafe or outside your approval limit.

If you're unsure who owns something, ask before it becomes a problem.

  • Frontline staff bring equipment, facility and safety issues to you.
  • You and the Community Lead work it out together when ownership is unclear.
  • Anything above your approval limit or outside your lane goes to Kellen.

How you are reviewed

You'll get direct feedback in the moment, positive and corrective. We expect the same from you when a standard isn't clear or doesn't match reality.

You show the behavior first, and the compensation follows. The quarterly evaluation is where that gets written down.

  • Weekly: Fill out your Weekly Space Audit.
  • Quarterly: A Lead Evaluation scores your skills, our values and your agency across the 9 traits.
